Women + Youth Women’s State Titles 2018

Baseball Queensland is pleased to announce an exciting new opportunity for female baseball players in 2018. In December this year Bannister Park will be the home to the QLD Women’s State Titles and QLD Youth Women’s State Titles.

There will be opportunities for female players of all ages with three events: Little League (12 and under), Senior League (16 and under) and Open Age Women. The age groups are offered as a guide only and will be loosely applied to ensure we can cater to any player who wants to participate.

Event Dates will be:

15 & 16 December 2018 – QLD Women’s State Titles (Bannister Park, Gerler Road, Hendra)

17 & 18 December 2018 – QLD Youth Women’s State Titles (Bannister Park, Gerler Road, Hendra)

Teams will be scheduled three games per day with games being played to a 90-minute time limit. During both the Senior League (16 and under) and Open Age Women’s Tournaments players will be considered for representative selection to the relevant Queensland teams playing at the Australian Women’s and Youth Women’s Baseball Championships to be held April 2019.

The intent is to grow these State Titles events as part of the newly developed Female Participation pathway. Baseball Queensland invites players to contact their club or association to express interest in playing in these events no later than 29 October 2018. Players from associations with few female players can be accommodated within other teams.

GBL Women’s League Opening Weekend

Saturday 20th October marked the first game of the inaugural Women’s League for 2018. Four teams from across Queensland have entered into an 8-week competition to play some friendly, yet spirited baseball.

Western District Bulldogs Baseball Club, Southern Stars Baseball Club, and Redcliffe Padres Baseball Club have each put teams forward; with a huge turn out from Padres, resulting in two teams from that club.

Each Saturday, the teams play 1.5hr double headers at the one location starting mid afternoon.

The first game of the double header on Saturday 20th October saw Padres Red go head to head with Wests in a tight game resulting in the two teams drawing 10-10 after 3 innings. With outstanding teamwork and spirit from both teams, this was an entertaining game for the books.

Special mention to the West family who have made the 2018 women’s season a full family affair. Sally West, along with her two daughters, Kate and Amy are all sporting red uniforms for their beloved team, Padres.

Kate West comments on the season being one for the ages, “I would say that I’m incredibly excited about playing with Mum. She is so well known in the baseball community and a perfect example of the target market for this initiative. Baseball mums, sisters, partners, volunteers, fans who know baseball like the back of their hand but have never had a real opportunity to get involved in a social, non-competitive environment. From my perspective, the growth of women’s baseball starts with recruitment for the love of the game. My family are used to playing in a team together (all bar Mum have played in Divisions 4-6 collectively several times over the last four years) and have had varying degrees of success in maintaining familial ties [laughs] but I am very keen to see Mum out of the scorers box and onto the field!”

The final game of the double-header saw the second Padres team (White) take on Southern Stars in a fantastic action packed game. Southern Stars took the win 15-2 after 4 innings of fierce play!

The spirit of the game is captured perfectly in this league of friendly and highly entertaining baseball; with music blaring, all teams playing hard and plenty of laughs, do yourself a favour and get out to your nearest club to watch these games and support women in baseball!

QLD Bandits To Tour Japan in 2019

As part of Baseball Queensland’s agreement with Saitama Prefecture High School Baseball Federation (Japan), Baseball Queensland will take a touring team to Japan from 5-14 July 2019.

The Saitama agreement has seen teams from Japan visit Queensland to play against our U18 QLD Bandits team since 2015. This long standing relationship provides our team with high quality competition in the lead up to our event which serves as a great preparation for our annual National Championships campaign.

In the interest of preserving the relationship with Saitama so future generation of Bandits players might benefit from playing this series of high quality games right before heading off to Nationals, it is imperative that we service the relationship by reciprocating with a tour to Japan. It is BQ’s intent to establish this tour to Japan as a key element in our Queensland Bandits program moving forward.

It is our intent to take the most competitive team available. We are aware that some players on our soon to be selected final team (for 2019 National Championships – 2018/19 QLD Bandits U18 team) may have commitments that render them unavailable for the tour next year (University etc). With this in mind the tour is currently open to any player named in the 2018/19 Squad that was announced after the 2018 U18 State Titles.

Early indications are that the tour will cost approximately $4000.00 per participant. For those interested in participating, you have ample time to start raising/earning funds to help cover the cost of your trip.

Darryl Luchterhand: 600 GBL Games

Baseball Queensland would like to congratulate Darryl Luchterhand on completing his 600th game for the Toowoomba Rangers.

Darryl’s career in baseball is inspiring to say the least, with a love for baseball that runs blood deep, Luchterhand has left his mark on the Ranger’s club in a positive way for all involved. Darryl currently plays in the Division 3 competition and ticked off game 600 in the Rangers’ series against the Narangba Demons last weekend.

Darryl’s journey in baseball started as an A Grade pitcher on the Windsor All Stars team and after his father, Ian, convinced him to take on a player-coach role on the Ranger’s A Grade team in 1992, he never looked back.

Darryl credits his All Stars coach, Ted Roebuck for his success and reveals, “I have a lot to thank Ted for and I’m certain what he’d been able to teach me helped the Rangers win the Division One premiership the first time I came to the club.”

Luchterhand has coached at the club for many years, specifically involved in the junior developmental programs. Darryl coached his daughter, Taylee from under 14’s to under 20’s; so it’s safe to say the baseball gene runs deep in the Luchterhand family.

Darryl comments on why so many Rangers members are devoted to the club’s culture, “I’ve pretty much been the coaching director at the club from day one and when my dad passed away, it was a natural progression to take over running the club. The camaraderie surrounding baseball and at this club made it a hard sport to walk away from. The friends I’ve made just through playing at Rangers are amazing. I’m planning on going overseas next year with my wife and catching up with some of the guys who have player for us over the years is something I’m looking forward to. I’m just proud to be able to play for this club and that’s what it’s about. It’s not all about playing on the field. It’s about playing for the Rangers’ jersey. Players want to get their names on our honour board. That’s what it means to a lot of guys. Not just me.”
