Women’s Futures League Underway

Women’s Futures League Underway

Women’s Futures League commenced last Wednesday night at the Mt Gravatt Eagles Baseball Club.  An excellent start to the inaugural series with Queensland Women’s Coach, Lisa Norrie throwing the first pitch of the game with an iridescent sunset as the backdrop.

We were fortunate enough to also have Baseball Queensland’s Commissioner, Chris Norrie in attendance to see all three teams play quality baseball and set a high standard for the next six-weeks.

It is exciting to have such a multitude of talent, from young developing players through to experienced state and national representatives who come together as a team to share their knowledge and experience which creates an amazing opportunity for growth.  Having BQ’s newly appointed Player Development Coordinator, Nick Bachono onsite to provide feedback and guidance, encouraging players to focus on improving their individual skills was positively welcomed.

Round 3 starts tonight with Jethawks taking on Lumberjacks at 6:30pm then Yardbirds taking on Jethawks at 8:15pm at Beenleigh Hawks Baseball Club.

Board Member Update

Board Member Update

Andy Utting joins the Board, David Badke re-elected and we say farewell to Alan Connors.

ANDY UTTING is no stranger to the Baseball Queensland community, and we are thrilled that he is the newest addition to the Board.  From playing minor league baseball in the USA, to winning silver with the Australian baseball team at the Athens Olympics, there is no denying that Andy is invested in the sport, and with his exceptional experience will hopefully create opportunities to inspire and motivate baseball enthusiasts across Queensland.

Family commitments have made it difficult to contribute to baseball for the past 5-6 years, but the opportunity to hold a position on the Board allows me to apply my broad range of experiences in baseball (and sport) to support the development of the game in Queensland, without the need to be out on the diamond on a daily/weekly basis.”

DAVID BADKE has been re-elected on to the Baseball Queensland Board.

He has been on the Board for the last two years as the Director of Game Development and in that time has been the driving force behind Futures League pathways, U16/U18 Showcase event and Little League State Titles becoming a BQ festival style week of baseball creating opportunities for all levels.

He brings his wealth of knowledge and experience through various roles at local, regional, state and national levels and 35+ years within the sport and his passion to continue to develop and expand the game is a true asset to Baseball Queensland.

ALAN CONNORS has served on the Board as the Deputy Commissioner for the last three years.  He was very much a strong presence on the Board, and he will be missed.

Chris Norrie, Commissioner of BQ wrote a heartfelt letter to acknowledge his achievements with us.

Dear Alan,

I write to you on the occasion of our 2022 Annual General Meeting, the first such meeting for a number of years without your presence. In fact, I have read this to the members.

It is with some sadness that I relay to the assembly of your intention to not run for re-election.

You are – and have always been in your time on the Board – a voice of consensus and clarity.
As Deputy Commissioner, you assumed control of the Board during a very dark time for our organisation – when we were being attacked on many fronts – and you not only provided a steady hand in continuing to move the organisation forward, but in fending off the many challenges you and your colleagues faced on behalf of our members. We often forget that we are all volunteers, and it is not normal to be perpetually under threat of litigation or censure.

But the times have changed, and through your work and the others you have helped me lead, we are in a significantly better place today. There is now so much more being done, and the platform for a promising future for Baseball in our state. And much of this we will owe to your commitment to the sport, your colleagues and our members over many years.

On behalf of the Board of Management and the representatives of our members, I thank you for your service, and wish you and your family well into the future. You will be missed.

Yours faithfully,

CHRIS NORRIE
Commissioner

NEW LIFE MEMBER – KEVIN CANTWELL

NEW LIFE MEMBER – KEVIN CANTWELL

Kevin ‘KC’ Cantwell has been granted Honorary Life Membership to Baseball Queensland for his significant service to BQ and to the game of baseball.  With respect flooding in from all around Australia, it’s obvious that KC’s passion for the sport not only inspires the players and coaches, but the entire baseball community.

“KC played with NSW Claxton Shield for a lot of years and in 1978 for Queensland. For 4 years he was the state coach and he started coaching kids at that stage, and juniors, and has been doing it ever since. The last 15-20 years he’s mostly worked with the Elite guys and he’s still coaching at club level too. He was actually asked by the old Australian coach to go and help his hitters.  That’s the respect he has throughout Australia and honestly, he is the most respected guy in the country.”

– NEV BROCKIE

“The unanimous vote to grant Kevin BQ Life Membership was a testament to the positive impact he has had on so many people from the baseball community. Not only did the vote show he is a worthy recipient, words were shared from the floor highlighting his reach across baseball in Queensland. It was an honour to be able to put Kevin’s name forward for Life Membership and I am so grateful that he was able to get the recognition he deserves for being a great servant to this wonderful game of baseball.”

– JAMES SOMERVILLE

“Kevin Cantwell becoming a Baseball QLD Life Member being recognised for his many years of contribution in QLD is well and truly deserving. The wealth of knowledge and experience he has offered over many years to players and coaches is outstanding, specifically working with the catchers. Kevin is never short of a story of when he played and the teams he has been involved with, Kevin continues to be active and part of this year’s winter development and State squad programs.

I look forward to seeing Kevin out on the field helping out our young and upcoming players.”

– DAVID BADKE

U18 SQUAD ANNOUNCEMENT

U18 SQUAD ANNOUNCEMENT

“Heading into my second year of managing our under 18 QLD state representative players, I am excited by the growth of baseball and the development of our athletes. This year’s Showcase event allowed close to 70 athletes to play in 4 days of competition. Our panel has now picked a large roster of players to work toward the AYC23 Event in January. I’m energised about our expanding game and the playing opportunities from grassroots to high performance.”
