Given the success of the recent Women’s State Titles, the interest in participation in the female pathways has grown leading to more players than ever before competing for a chance to wear the Queensland uniform. A quality crowd rolled into Holloway field for the annual Paul Mutch Cup held on Friday night, the 8th of February. With both Pine Hills and Windsor looking to cement their postseason spots this game was significant in the result and the cup itself. This annual fixture holds significance for both teams as they honour the life of Paul Mutch who played for both the Pine Hills Lightning and the Windsor Royals.
The Windsor Royals got off to a flying lead in the first innings with the bats in full swing. This would secure the home win for the Royals and winning the Paul Mutch Cup for 2019.
We would like to thank both teams for the spirit the game was played in and for all the fans for supporting both teams and the annual event.
This Friday night the Windsor Royals will host Pine Hills Lightning for the Annual Paul Mutch Cup.
The Mutch Cup has been a regular fixture annually within the GBL season between Windsor and Pine Hills. It is a game of significance as both teams honour Paul Mutch as a player and a person. Paul passed away from a heart condition in 2004. Mutch played his junior years of baseball for Pine Hills and then moved to Windsor as a senior as at the time Pine Hills did not have senior baseball.
Mutch’s talent was identified as a junior and was named in the Australian under 17 side for a tour of South Africa. In 2004 Mutch was part of the starting pitching rotations for the Queensland in the Claxton Shield competition and was a member of the 2004 Olympic Shadow Squad. A highlight was Paul being signed to the Minnesota Twins.
“The Mutch Cup game has been a standing fixture annually between Windsor and Pine Hills,’’ explained Windsor Royals coach Jamie Knight. “It is a game on the calendar of each team where both sides are desperate to win.”
First pitch on Friday will be at 7 pm at Holloway Field, Newmarket.
There will be free hot dogs for juniors wearing either Pine Hills or Royals club colours or hats.
With the recent rainfall and weather events occurring in our state’s north, the Baseball Queensland Board of Management and myself wish to offer our combined support for those enduring this difficult time. We know North Queensland people are strong and will endure, yet in the moment, we acknowledge how difficult this is.
